What Can I Do to Limit Climate Change?

  • Become the best informed of your social circle on climate change and its potential impacts and become a Climate Guru, but you don’t have to grow a beard, wear crazy socks and tie die your clothes!

  • Email your local and national politicians and the United Nations to act.

  • Can you use solar panels at home to use less electricity in heating and hot water?

  • Can you get a hybrid car or go fully electric if your journeys are short?

  • Eat less imported food, particularly beef, prawns, fish and anything that has travelled a long way to get to you.

  • Take more local holidays, fly less. Can you manage a short haul every 3 years and a long haul every 8 years?

  • In what ways does your consumption generally lead to the destruction of nature somewhere else in the world?

  • Buy fewer clothes and consider buying second hand clothes. Can you manage on 3 new items a year? I can’t….

  • Reuse things, fix them up, repair, keep things for longer and buy fewer new things

  • Work out what your carbon footprint is. Find out Here on the WWF website or you can do a detailed Carbon Footprint calculator and offset it here.

  • Become aware of the changing climate and the Earths trigger points.

  • Bear in mind the below two rules on human behaviour.

1: Humans are very adaptive to change and can adapt quickly to new circumstances. This is evident in Covid when we have to lockdown. We might not like it, but we adapt and carry on as best we can.

2: Humans resist change as much as possible and for as long as possible. We will only change if we are forced to. In the case of Covid if there are laws that restrict what we can do and where we can go. We need laws to be made about how we should adapt to climate change.

In March 2023 the IPCC has released a key report telling us what we need do. There are 8 things which are:

1 Reduce Methane emissions;

2 Stop deforestation

3 Restore degraded land and dont return it to agriculture

4 Change agriculture and change the way we eat

5 Use more Solar and wind power

6 Be more energy efficient in how we use energy

7 Stop burning coal

8 Put climate at the heart of all decision making

We Need to Put into Law and Ruthlessly enforce the following to save our World and its Environment:

  • Preserving habitats and ecosystems.

  • Not polluting the air, land, water or sea.

  • Preserving the habitats for indigenous peoples to look after for everyone else to enjoy.

  • Fishing practices that prevent fish stocks from falling.

  • Not deforesting and replanting forests.

  • Not burning oil and coal. Using more renewable energy and conserving energy use.

  • Water conservation and not depleting water resources.

  • Having and enforcing environmental laws to protect the natural world.
